When the report you need does not exist yet

Common questions about Analytics & Business Intelligence
Do we have to choose between SSRS, Power BI and Excel?
No. All three ship in the same platform and are meant to work alongside each other. Structured monthly and compliance reports go to SSRS; interactive management analysis goes to Power BI; finance spreadsheets go to Excel-native reports. Each tool serves a different audience and a different question.
Where does Power BI get its data — the live database or somewhere else?
From a dedicated reporting-grade data warehouse, separate from the transactional database. That keeps the operational system fast during business hours and gives the analytical models a structure shaped for slicing, not for OLTP throughput. Refresh cadence is configurable per model.
Can users build reports themselves, or must every report be developed?
Both. Standard and custom SSRS reports are developed and versioned; users refine them via parameters. But universal data export lets any user pull the data from any form they are looking at — no development required. That covers the ad hoc questions that never need to become recurring reports.
How dynamic are report parameters?
Very. Dropdowns pull from controlled lists (companies, branches, account ranges), multi-select checkboxes toggle categories on and off, date pickers arrive with smart defaults (this-month, YTD, from-to), and free-text fields cover code and reference searches. Every SSRS report — standard or custom — supports the same parameter model.
What is an "online workbench"?
A live, on-screen operational view — real-time, no scheduled refresh, no report run. Supervisors watch WIP; buyers watch open POs and expected deliveries; quality leads watch NCRs. Workbenches are for the decision that needs to happen now, not the report that summarises what already happened.
Can we build custom SSRS reports, or are we limited to what ships?
